The presidential election results have been announced. This shift in political leadership is likely to usher in national changes to public health. And these changes may have a very real impact on people’s lives, especially those of our patients and staff. If you are feeling overwhelmed, afraid, or hopeless – we understand. But we need you to know there is always hope in our community. We are here with you. We are in this together.

Together, we have always found a way forward and today is no different. 26 years ago, we rose to the occasion to address a marginalized group of people living with HIV at a time when the government and society largely looked away. We did it together. And in 2020, when we faced a worldwide pandemic, we did not stop seeing patients or taking care of each other. Together, we made it to the other side. Our greatest strength has always been our resilience and dedication to fight together for our patients.

While this election may feel like a step backward for our community, we also see undeniable proof of hope for the future. For the first time, an openly transgender member of Congress will be sworn in. Marriage equality amendments prevailed with overwhelming support and voters passed ballot referendums protecting abortion.

We are here. Our resolve and mission remain the same. We will work tirelessly to meet the needs of our patients with compassion, dignity, and respect. As Mother Jones said in 1902, “Pray for the dead and fight like hell for the living.”

We will face whatever comes next, together.
